Suzan Donnell |
Susan Donnell was recognized as being a good neighbor. After a particularly bad storm when many residents experienced flooded basements, Susan’s neighbor came over to her house asking for help because water was pouring into her basement. The neighbor was renting the home and couldn’t reach the landlord. Susan immediately got on the phone and found out different options her neighbor could use to get help. Susan then compiled a newsletter that she distributed to everyone on her street that outlined all the important information and phone numbers (FEMA, the sewer district, the City) that residents who had flood damage to their homes would need to receive assistance.
Susan also stepped in when a small kindergartner was being beaten up by a much larger 6th grader. Susan broke up the disturbance and made all the children go home. She then went to the elementary school, and spoke to the Principal. The next day, she heard a knock at her door. There stood the 6th grader with his father. The young man apologized, and the father said that his son would never do such a thing again. And, he hasn’t.
Susan made a difference in our community.

Jen Stephens |
Jen was honored recently in being selected as the Ferguson-Florissant School District’s Teacher of the Year. This is the highest honor a teacher can receive from their school district. First you have to be nominated by your fellow teachers in your building, and then you have to be willing to go through the 16 page application process in order to compete for the award. A committee of teachers and administrators go through the applications and select the final nominees who then go through an oral interview before being selected as the one teacher representing the district as its best teacher of the year. Jen will go on to compete as Missouri’s Teacher of the Year. The state Teacher’s of the Year then compete for the National Teacher of the Year.
Jen was recognized as being a master teacher of reading at Ferguson Middle School.
She is skilled in her field, knowledgeable in the current research, dedicated, goes beyond the call of duty to her students and school, works long hours, and is highly effective in educating all levels of abilities in her classroom. After all that, Jen still finds time to be involved in our city and neighborhood. She has organized a 5K run/walk when she was a member of the Streetfest committee. She volunteers as a gardener with the Ferguson Volunteer Gardeners, and she is a board member of the Ferguson Caring League. Both Jen and her husband volunteer at the Ferguson Farmer’s Market, and she also adopted her block as part of the Keep Ferguson Beautiful campaign.
For these accomplishments, Jen was recognized for the Good Neighbor Award.
